Mamra vs Gurbandi almonds — what the difference actually is.
If you know Mamra, you already know what you want from an almond: high oil, small kernel, rich taste. Here is how Mamra badam and Gurbandi badam really compare, from a house that has traded both terms across the counter in Khari Baoli since 1992.
The short answer
Mamra is a trade name; Gurbandi is a varietal. Mamra broadly describes high-oil, non-California almonds from Iran and Afghanistan, sold at a premium under a name Indian consumers recognise. Gurbandi is a defined Afghan variety with the same high-oil character, graded consistently and usually better value per kilo. Anyone who buys Mamra for its taste and soaking quality is, in practice, looking for what Gurbandi delivers.

Both beat California almonds on oil
California almonds are bred for size, shelf life and volume. They are excellent commodity almonds, but they are comparatively low in oil, which is why they taste flatter and why oil extractors avoid them. Mamra and Gurbandi sit at the other end of the spectrum: smaller kernels, far more oil and a taste people notice immediately after soaking.
